CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Summoned by the Sage

When Sidney was jolted awake by the clang of the rising bell, she felt as though she’d only just gone to sleep. She had lain awake for hours, her heart beating very fast, snatches of that disturbing conversation swimming through her head.

Oh, please let there be a letter from George today.

Ginny’s bedsprings creaked as she shifted on to her side. Sidney slipped out of bed. If she could dress and head to the bathroom before the others got up, she could hopefully avoid any conversation.

“You came back eventually then,” mumbled Ginny.

“Mm,” said Sidney, pulling on her stockings.

“Took your time. Is your ankle all right?”

“Not too bad. A bit painful.” Sidney made a mental note to remember to limp.

More creaking of bedsprings. “I can’t get up,” moaned Phyllis. “I feel like death.”

“Stop whining,” came Lucinda’s muffled voice. “You were such a baby last night.”

“Me?!” squeaked Phyllis, sitting bolt upright in indignation.

“I was playing along,” said Lucinda. “Just for fun. There wasn’t anything there really.”

“But you saw and heard it. We all did.”

“It was just your imagination playing tricks. Shadows and the wind. I wasn’t really scared.”

Sidney took her blouse from the bedside chair.

“It was real,” said Phyllis. “Wasn’t it, Ginny?”

“There was certainly something under that dust sheet,” said Ginny. “Whether it was a ghost or not, though… I’d be very interested to hear what you think, Sidney.”

Sidney’s stomach clenched. She buttoned up her blouse and kept her head down as she crossed the room with her wash bag.

“I think you owe me two shillings,” she said.
